How Does the Competition Work?

Register

The first step of the competition is to register. Visit our registration page to register a team. Start off by registering your primary team, or your "A" team, and you can register your alternate team along the way. The last day to register is Dec TBD, 2026! Please fill in a new registration form for each team you want to register in the January 2027 UP Mathletes competition.

Prepare

To know what math skills your team needs to prepare for, check them out on the "Categories" tab of our website. Start out by mastering these math skills, and brushing up on your mental math and math facts. Then, you can start checking regularly for practice packets that will be posted under the "Practice" tab of the website. Have regular meetings or practice sessions to ensure that your team does well!

Awards

During the awards ceremony, we will announce the top player from each team and the 2nd and third place team. Then, the top five individual players will be awarded medals. Finally, our top scoring team wins a trophy to take home! Rankings are determined by highest total amount of points and tie breakers will be made by selecting the person/team with the highest positive difference from game/individual averages.

Rounds

There are two types of rounds in the UP Mathletes competitions. The first round is the 1v1 rounds, where players go head to head against players from other teams. There are 3 categories for the 1v1 rounds: Algebra, Geometry, and Statistics. Each team must assign one player to play in each category of the 1v1 rounds. The second type of round is the group round, where teams will go against other teams. In each game, there are 10 questions, the first half of which will be no-calculator questions, and the second half of which will be calculator questions.

Basic Rules

1. Each correct answer to a question in the 1v1 round counts for double points, while in the group rounds it counts for 1 point.
2. Each incorrect answer is worth 0 points without any deductions.
3. Players can only answer after the question has been finished.
4. The winner of a game is the side that receives the most points. If there is a tie at the end of the question set, a tiebreaker question will be used with unlimited buzz-ins until the tie is broken.
5. On normal questions (non-tiebreaker questions), each player has only one chance to buzz-in during the 1v1 round. During group rounds, each team will have two buzz opportunities, but they cannot be from the same player.
